For His Heart: A Sonnet

What steady hero’s rhythm does ignite

On shelves of books or words spoke riverside

In manner of a stable hand precise

Transfixed beneath the meaning I won’t hide?

The risk of subtext naked needs no room

Stripped in the will of lovers speaking truth

Of strength and coffee silently assumed

To loosen all the rules of viny noose.

To feel the violet swell or water’s calm

In breathing exaltations always met

As constantly as safely wrapping palms

With certainty of now—future forgets.

What kindness offered, I return in lines,

Defiant restoration now entwined.
