Thor loves food. Whether he’s chowing down on a pink creamsicle in a golden age comic, raiding Jane’s fridge (or cooking her dinner) in “Thor: The Mighty Avenger,” or smashing his coffee cup and demanding “ANOTHER!” in the 2011 film, it’s clear that he enjoys discovering Midgardian food and drink.

While writing at a cafe, I found myself wondering exactly what Thor would order there. Since we know he likes poptarts and coffee, the answer became clear: a poptart latte.

I put my barista skills to work to create such a beverage for Thorsday.

Thor’s Hot Fudge Sunday Poptart Latte

IMG_0562What you’ll need:

  • Reduced fat or nonfat milk
  • 2 hot fudge sundae poptarts (1 packet)
  • 1 plate
  • 1 geeky coffee mug
  • Espresso machine
  • Espresso
  • Vanilla creamer or vanilla syrup (you can buy this at Walmart or Starbucks)

Step 1: Make the espresso.

Make two shots of espresso using your espresso machine. Make sure you use cold water in the machine – let the machine do the heating. As this is happening, place 2 pumps of syrup (or a bit of liquid creamer) into the bottom of the mug. Once the espresso is done brewing, pour it directly into your mug. Place a splash of cold milk in there to ‘hold’ the shot if you aren’t using liquid creamer. This helps it keep its flavor.

Using your espresso machine’s steaming wand, steam the milk. I recommend nonfat or reduced fat milk because it makes better foam (you’ll see why you need this later on). To get the best foam, make sure you position your wand to get the ‘kissing’ sound it makes when just barely touching the milk.

Step 3: Pour the milk.

Pour your milk into the cup. Use a large spoon to hold back the foam until the cup is 3/4 full. Spoon out the thick, velvety foam and let it stand for about a minute. While you are waiting, unwrap your poptarts. Place one of them on the plate whole. Break the other one into small pieces. Triangular or rectangular pieces work best.

Step 4: Add the poptart to the latte. Carefully place your poptart pieces onto the latte. One or two might sink in, but overall, if your foam is good enough, it will hold the poptart pieces.

Step 5: Place mug on plate next to the other poptart and enjoy! Additionally, you can add whipped cream in place of foam. The whipped cream will also hold the poptart pieces.

Once the food soaks up the espresso, it makes for a delicious combination. I’m sure Thor would approve and demand ANOTHER!
